John Walker has a wide experience developing and presenting training across his areas of legal expertise. John trains in education and children law. Over the years, courses have been presented to the voluntary, statutory sector, small groups and large audiences.
Whilst John is happy to provide bespoke training to either individual authorities or groups of interested parties, the present fixed courses are :-
- A basic guide to child protection and the law.
This is a course designed for people and organisations who regularly come into contact with children. It outlines the key features of child protection and safeguarding, including consideration of the legal framework, practical advice about how to be compliant with relevant law and how to manage any child protection or safeguarding concerns which may arise as a result of dealings with children. The course is designed for the voluntary sector, including church groups, youth groups and also for employers who have contact with children on a regular basis.
- A practical guide to court proceedings involving children.
This course is specifically designed for professionals working with children who may have to present evidence in Court. The course aims to give practical examples of good practice for Social Workers, Child Care Assistants, Family Aids, Health Visitors and anyone involved in the Court process. The course explains the importance of preparing effective statements and reports and also how to be most effective when attending Court and giving evidence.
This course involves role plays and is delivered by John, with assistance from very experienced Social Workers and Guardians.
- School Appeals training.
This training is designed for Panel Members and/or Local Authority Presenting Officers and Clerks. The course sets out the basic legal framework, highlighting recent case law and Ombudsman decisions. It focuses on the key elements of the Local Authority case, presentation and evidence, and looks at what information Panel Members must consider in deciding whether or not to allow an appeal.
- Children, domestic violence and the law.
This course is specifically designed for statutory and voluntary sector workers managing the complexities of domestic violence, in particular where it interacts with the law concerning children. It is a course designed to be a working guide for practitioners, and to ensure that there is an understanding of the Criminal and Civil Court process, the roles and responsibilities of the various agencies and looks at the sometimes competing needs of children and adults who have been affected by domestic violence.
